The code of birding ethics
The Tadoussac Bird Observatory promotes respectful and responsible birdwatching practices. As such, we adhere to the ethical guidelines promoted by QuébecOiseaux as well as Birds Canada’s Code of Conduct for Birdwatching. By observing birds with patience, discretion, and respect, we collectively contribute to their conservation and ensure that everyone can enjoy this unique experience under the best possible conditions.

Code of ethics for birdwatching and bird photography
Most birdwatchers are committed to protecting the environment, respecting the law, and fostering positive relationships with others. With these values in mind, QuébecOiseaux has adopted this Code of Ethics to promote responsible birdwatching and bird photography. By becoming a member, everyone agrees to uphold the following principles.
As a birdwatcher or bird photographer, I commit to following these ethical principles to protect birds and their habitats while preserving the reputation of birdwatching as a responsible and respectful activity.
Respect for birds and their habitat
– I observe or photograph birds in ways that avoid disturbance or disruption of their natural behavior, always prioritizing their welfare. I maintain an appropriate distance to prevent unnecessary stress and refrain from using audio playback.
– I avoid disturbing local wildlife and vegetation. I stay on designated trails and respect sensitive habitats.
– I minimize my environmental footprint by adopting sustainable practices, such as carpooling and using other environmentally friendly means of transportation to reach birding sites.
– I promote coexistence with birds by reducing threats such as window collisions and predation by domestic cats. If I use bird feeders or nest boxes, I ensure they are placed in safe locations and properly maintained.
Respect for the birding community
– I treat others with courtesy, both in the field and on social media. I respect the interests and experience levels of fellow birdwatchers and bird photographers.
– I contribute positively to the birding community by sharing my knowledge and experiences. I participate in citizen science initiatives and support research and conservation efforts.
– Before sharing the presence of a bird, I use good judgment and consider whether the bird or the site can tolerate the increased attention that may result. At all times, I protect sensitive species by not publicly disclosing their precise locations.
– If I witness harmful behavior, I promote the recommendations of this Code of Ethics with tact and courtesy.
Respect for laws and property
– I familiarize myself with, and comply with, all laws and regulations governing the areas where I observe or photograph birds.
– I do not enter private property without the owner’s permission and do not obstruct public roads or rights-of-way.
– I act responsibly and respectfully toward local residents. I maintain positive relationships with landowners and, where appropriate, share my observations with them.
